Although nowadays there are some people who know about emotional education, ten years ago not many people knew about it. We have realized that, when we were at school, we received no education for our emotions and, in our opinion, everybody need it.
For example, in the case of María: “since I was a child I talk a lot and I am always speaking with everybody, so in class I used to talk with my partners, and my teacher always was scolding me and saying to my colleges: “what are we going to do with María...?”, and, finally, she separated me from my classmates and she sit me at a desk next to the teacher’s table in order to not to talk with anyone. I did not like it and I wanted to change it trying not to talk but, I don’t know how I always spoke again accidentally”. We think that in this case, the teacher could have worked with her through the emotions, it is, in order to teach her to control her emotions, to express them well and not to do it, as she did, talking always in class. And it is why we have decided to talk about it.
As Maurice J., Steven E. and Brian S. (2015) say in their book there is a 24 carat gold rule that says “Treat others as you would like others to treat you”, and this rule has five principles that are:
- Be aware of your own feelings and those of others.
Many children confuse their feelings. Once we are able to recognize our different feelings we will have more possibilities to control them. This is because the way of being of a person influences a lot in his acts, and if the person does not know how is he or what he feels, he will not know how to act in each situation.
- Show empathy and understand others' points of view.
- Respond positively to emotional and behavioral impulses and regain them.
It is important to know how to control and regulate our impulses, and to wait enough to be able to act. In this way, if we focus on the problem that we have raised before, we can teach María that when she is in class, she has to know to control herself and not to satisfy the impulses of the moment (in this case, to speak), but wait for the break to be able to do it.
- Plan positive goals and outline plans to achieve them.
Also, something positive that we can teach our students is to know what the goals are and to know how pose them in a easy way to get them. In this way, the pupil will have motivation in order to achieve a the goal that he want to.
- Use positive social skills when managing your relationships.
All in all, we think that the emotional education is something that not everybody use, but it is something that most of the teacher would have to work with. It is due to our acts: we act in one way or another depending on how do we feel in that moment or what are our feelings, and this is the principal reason why it is very important to know our feelings well and to know how to control ourselves.
